Banner Drops

If you want to call attention to an issue in your campaign, a banner drop is a useful way to do so. Pick an event or a day in which it will have maximum impact (e.g. a banner drop in support of striking staff on graduation day).

Banners are a good way to include fun elements of campaigning (craftivism) with a real chance of getting coverage for the campaign. A short simple message, on a striking background dropped from a vantage ground can lead to photos being taken by the press, by participants of the event, or if it is on a normal day, members of the public. This has worked for other non-political groups – for example, the Szentek music collective put banners in members windows around town, to publicise their event.

When you find a place to drop it from, make sure you do a safety check. Don’t risk your life to place the banner and do it from a window/somewhere enclosed. DO NOT CLIMB ONTO BUILDINGS. Alongside safety make sure you have equipment to fix the banner on, and determine a way out of the building safely. This means you can leave the banner up without risking being caught or any confrontation.
