St Andrews Freshers 2024

WHAT TO EXPECT

We know it can be a bit daunting coming to University and we want to help make it as easy as possible.

St Andrews is a unique little town. It has three main streets and three beautiful beaches! We often refer to the town as “the bubble” as so much happens that’s unique to us. Here’s some information about what to expect when you first arrive and during your time in St Andrews.

HOW TO FIND US

If you are travelling by train the nearest station is Leuchars Station. Once you’ve arrived you can reach St Andrews via bus (they normally run every 10 minutes) or taxi.

If you’re travelling by plane, the nearest major airport is Edinburgh Airport. From there you can reach St Andrews by taking the bus to Haymarket Station and then taking the train to Leuchars.

We are in the middle of town on St Mary’s Place, in a beautiful big glass building that you can’t miss.

MEETING PEOPLE

It can sometimes be tricky to meet new people and there will be lots of opportunities to talk to fellow students in halls, during events and when you start your studies, but if you want to chat to people before you arrive we have a Class of 28 Instagram page and a WhatsApp community.

SETTLING IN

For most new students, moving to St Andrews is the start of a new life: the first time living away from home, and fending for yourself. So it's normal to have lots of questions, that might only seem obvious once you've lived here for a while.

TRADITIONS

St Andrews is famous for its strange traditions! Find out more about Academic families, Raisin Weekend, May Dip, why and how to wear the Red Gown.

UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

The Orientation Guides is a great place to find out what’s going on throughout the Freshers’ Week.

There’s lots of helpful information on the University’s website covering before you depart, once you arrive, and what orientation week looks like.

LOCAL ELECTIONS

All students with an address in Scotland can register to vote. You can do so online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

If you have recently moved address or changed your name, you will need to register again to be able to vote in the next election.

If you are a UK student, you can be registered to vote at both your home and term time address. You will be able to vote in both locations for local elections but can only vote in one location in national elections, such as UK Parliamentary general elections and Scottish Parliament elections.

WE'RE HERE FOR YOU AND WE HEAR YOU

We have 6 elected full-time sabbatical officers, around 60 officers, School Presidents, and Convenors whose role is to represent you to the student community, university and at a national level. So if you have a question please contact us or the officers directly (please note as it’s outside of term-time there may be a delay in response so contact us directly if you have a question).
