Welcome to the University of St Andrews Union Debating Society: the oldest – and some might say the finest – of its kind, founded in 1794.

The St Andrews Union Debating Society was founded in 1794 making it the oldest, and some might say, finest society of it's kind! All matriculated students are considered members meaning that all of our events are completely free to attend. For more information about the society please visit:

Debate Training:

Wednesdays - 2pm - Large Rehearsal Room (Union) 

All abilities are welcome to join our weekly training sessions. Learn how to debate in the British Parliamentary style! We regularly host internal competitions and send teams to external competitions across the country. For more information please email: [email protected]

Public Debates:

Thursdays - 7:30pm - Lower Parliament Hall (South Street) 

Every Thursday evening the UDS hosts a public debate in the historic lower parliament hall. Guests frequently include MP's, academics, business owners etc. with motions such as 'This House Opposes Monogamy' or 'This House Regrets The Influence of Religion On Education'. Come to watch our guests debate one another and even give a floor speech, you may win a prize! 

 

1794 Ball: 

Alongside our regular weekly socials, we also host an annual ball in November. For more information about the ball including theme and ticket release see our instagram @the1794ball 

All of our events are completely free to attend. We'd love to have you. 

Membership

This group is a Union subcommittee, not a society, so everyone's automatically a member!

Subcommittees are large groups funded directly by the Union.
