Researcher Development Fund

Researcher Development  Award

The Researcher Development Award is a sum of money awarded annually by the Students’ Association to postgraduate research or final year undergraduate students, to support them to take opportunities that would be developmentally significant in terms of research, such as attending academic conferences and travelling for research, when funding is not provided via other means. The money is awarded on a discretionary basis upon request to the President of Education, the President of Student Opportunities, and PGR or PGT President (the latter depending on the programme of study of the student applying to the Award).

Application Process:

To apply for funding from the Researcher Development Award, students need to complete the Application Form.

You should receive a response from the panel within 5-8 working days of submitting the form. Please do not assume funds are confirmed until confirmation has been issued.

Guidelines:

  • The Researcher Development Award works on a reimbursement basis, which means that you will need to show evidence of any purchases (e.g. receipts, invoices) in order to get reimbursement. It is not possible to get money before you make purchases, so you will need to keep hold of any receipts or invoices. If you are accepted for the Award, you will then need to send these on to the Union Cash Office, either by coming in person or by emailing UnionFinance@. · Any postgraduate student who would like to take an opportunity linked to their research (such as attending a relevant academic conference) support their work can apply to the fund.
  • Money from the Researcher Development Award can, for example, be used to pay for associated costs for conference attendance, such as:
    • Travel expenses
    • Hotel or accommodation costs
  • Money from the fund cannot be used to pay for alcohol.
  • Events may be funded through the Award where:
    • The total amount available from the award is capped at £250
      • Exceptions to this cap can be made with advanced prior consultation with the panel.
  • Applicants are not to assume funding has been granted until confirmation has been issued.
    • Changes to your planned use of the Award after the money is awarded may lead to changes in the funding, or even withdrawal of funding. It is essential to notify both the President of Education, the President of Student Opportunities, and the relevant PG President of any substantial changes applied to the conference or your attendance.
    • Where there is any disagreement on whether to accept the funding application, the PGR President will have the tie-breaking vote.
