Statment from Your Union regarding our Left Property Policy

*Please note this policy will will be implemented from Friday 25th April.

Hi Everyone,

We wanted to update you on our new Left Property Policy that we are implementing to – safely and fairly - remove any unattended items that are left around the building.

We’re sorry:

Firstly, we are sorry that the implementation of this new policy at the start of April was rushed and that it wasn’t communicated properly. Left property is a serious problem we have been very conscious of, and, following the small fire we had in our kitchen recently, we were keen to get a new system in place as quickly as possible. However, we should have given more notice and launched it with more care and understanding. We have taken on board your feedback and since had further conversations with the Executive Team. We are also conscious of some of the accessibility concerns with the original change; hence we are revising the implementation of the policy.

Why we are doing it:

The number of unattended items being left around the building is a serious fire, trip, and safety hazard. As a venue we are obliged to prioritise customers’ safety and part of this is to ensure there are no unattended items left anywhere in the building.   There is now new legislation that has been passed concerning safety at large scale events (Martyn’s Law), the implementation of our new policy takes account of this.

How will we do it:

Because of our legal obligations we can’t scrap this policy entirely, but we have changed how it will be implemented:

  • Any unattended property during our large-scale event nights will be picked up by the Customer Safety team and safely secured once the queue is in at the front door.

  • Property will be kept away from cloakroom items, and you will need to join a separate queue to retrieve it at the end of the night.

  • We will ask you for a £3 contribution to Campus Larder before you collect your item; if you do not collect it that night, you will need to collect it from reception the next day.

  • Please make use of our cloakroom – the usual fee is £1 or free for Platinum Pass holders and this guarantees the safety of any personal belongings.

  • We will take a slightly different approach during our quieter nights where there is no large-scale event and as a result no cloakroom, however, please avoid leaving items unattended.

Please note this policy will take effect from Friday 25th April.

Making it right: Refunds

If you paid the £5 reclaim fee on Wednesday 2nd April, you’re eligible for a refund, no receipt needed, just self-declaration.

Here’s how to claim:

  1. Did you pay with card?

Please email union@ where you can register for a refund. Just share your name, student number, and payment details. Refunds will be processed via bank transfer or card reversal.

  1. Did you pay with cash?

Pop to reception and we’ll take your name and student number, and you’ll receive £5 cash.

Please claim your refund within 14 days of this statement. We will not be able to process refunds after this time.

Any unclaimed funds will be donated to the Campus Larder.

We value you:

If you have any ongoing concerns or feedback, please feel free to reach out to us. Email union@ or fill out our feedback form on the website.

We’re here to help and want to make sure this transition goes as smoothly as possible to ensure your nights are as safe and fun as possible.

Ultimately this is a safety issue, and we want to get this right for all our customers.

We have listened and we have learned from this.

Please note the above policy may be subject to change depending on operational requirements.
