A Selection of Cheap Europe Hostels
Europe, backpacking and student travel are totally synonymous with one another. After all, there’s no better way to pass a long summer holiday than by strapping on your backpack and setting off travelling around the continent. But it’s not always the cheapest place to travel in. As a general rule, a tour of the continent can eat up the funds far faster than a similar trip around Southeast Asia or South America. To make your travel budget go that little further, though, you can always head east, where the prices are lower, and there are a host of some of the best cheap hostels in Europe. Accommodation’s always likely to be one of the major expenses while travelling, and a night in a hostel in Bratislava, Prague or Ljubljana is always likely to cost a fair bit less than their counterparts in Rome, Barcelona or Paris. Below is a tiny selection of some of the cheapest hostels (in some of the most affordable destinations) in Eastern Europe. By cheap, we mean €10 or cheaper – which, by anyone’s books is a great way of driving down costs on the road!

Cesky Krumlov

Hostel Merlin, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic
Within easy reach of Prague, the UNESCO protected Cesky Krumlov is one of the most stunningly idyllic little towns in the whole of Europe. And the excellent Hostel Merlin, set in an attractive red-roofed building, offers fully decked out kitchens, lively barbecues and a generally laidback vibe. It even hires rings to ride down the river… And all for around €10 a night!

Krakow

Hostel Yellow, Krakow, Poland
For some reason, Krakow has good hostels. Not just good hostels, in fact: amazing hostels! But these days – since word got out about what a great place it is – cheap hostels in Krakow are a little harder to come by. Which is what makes Hostel Yellow so special. They’ve got all the usual hostel trimmings – free internet access, complementary breakfast etc. – but prices starting at around about €8 a night for a bed in a dorm.

Patara

Caretta Pension, Patara, Turkey
On the south coast of Turkey, Patara is an absolutely sensational budget travel destination. On the outskirts of Gelemis lie the remains of a large Roman complex; not far from the ruins, the gorgeous Patara Beach stretches away, one of the many long strips of spotless white sand that line the fabulous Turquoise Coast. And by staying at Caretta Pension, this perfect melding of flop ‘n drop beach holiday and cultural break is available for a staggeringly low €5 a night!

Riga

Riga Hostel, Riga, Latvia
The popularity of Riga amongst backpackers and student travellers has gone absolutely through the roof in recent years. An alluring combination of attractive Old Town by day, and almost impossibly lively nightlife by night, it’s not hard to see why! And right in the heart of it all, Riga Hostel is well, a fantastic (and fantastically cheap!) Riga hostel.

Dobsina

Mountain Cottage Stara Horaren, Dobsina, Slovakia
The ice caves of Dobsina are one of Europe’s lesser known attractions. Which is surprising really, given that, at a vast 100 meters across, and frozen all year-round, these icy subterranean caverns are absolutely spectacular! The Mountain Cottage Stara Horaren is a wonderful rustic retreat in the heart of rural Slovakia. Miles off the beaten track, it’s in one of the most atmospherically authentic Eastern European locations – with all the advantages of low prices that come with it!
