This information is provided by the Students’ Association for postgraduates joining the university in Autumn 2009/10 and looking for accommodation in the private sector. There is quite high pressure on accommodation in St Andrews, so you may have to be patient and look outside of the town. For more information or if you have any questions, contact Georgina Rannard, the Director of Representation, on dorep@st-andrews.ac.uk.
Finding somewhere to live
• ‘How To Rent’: This is a guide to renting accommodation in St Andrews, written by the Students’ Association. You can download a copy on www.yourunion.net/howtorent
• Facebook Group: The Students’ Association has set up a facebook group that you can join and post on if you would like to find a flat or flatmates. The title of the group is St Andrews Find a Flat: Postgraduates 2009/10 and the link is http://www.facebook.com/groups/create.php?success=1&customize&gid=120616259388#/group.php?gid=120616259388&ref=mf
• Messageboards: www.thesinner.net This is an independent messageboard used by students at St Andrews, and has a section for accommodation. You can email an administrator to ask for an account, and for the summer period only you will be able to post a message without having a registered account.
• Noticeboards: If you are in St Andrews, there are noticeboards advertising rooms or asking for flatmates on the second floor of the Students’ Association. These are quiet at the moment but tend to get busier in September. There are also some cafes/shops in town that put up adverts.
• Out of town? A good number of postgraduates choose to live outside of St Andrews. It’s feasible, but make sure that you check transport as well as distance from St Andrews. You can find bus timetables and fares on http://www.stagecoachbus.com/fife/.
Leases and landlords
The Students’ Association employs an Accommodation advocate who can check over your lease to make sure everything is correct and give you advice on the legal side of renting. Email Eleanor Feltham on ef41@st-andrews.ac.uk or call 01334 462700.
Financial support
There is some limited financial support available for those who find themselves in financial difficulty, but you should not rely upon it being made available.
UK students can apply for a discretionary grant. Find more information at on the University website at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/money/Financialsupport/Discretionaryfund/
