► Inter-Hall Energy Competition

Inter-Hall Energy Competition

This is a fun opportunity for your hall to compete against other halls to see which one can reduce their energy consumption the most! Motivated by rising energy costs and the ever-looming threat of global disaster due to climate change, this is an exciting opportunity to give back to your hall.

 Prizes

The committees of halls that manage to reduce their energy consumption by the greatest amount will win the following prizes:

First prize - £1,000

Second prize - £500

Third prize - £250

Your hall committee can spend this money on whatever they like for their hall! How about an environmentally-themed party with locally-produced wine (yes, there is such a thing as Scottish wine!) and fair trade organic chocolate?

 Who to contact

Your hall should have a Senior Student and an Environment Representative, who will be your first point of contact surrounding the campaign. Perhaps you'd like to organise a team within your hall to run the campaign together?

For more general questions about the campaign, contact our Sustainability Officer Emma Weir on ew235@st-andrews.ac.uk.

 How to reduce energy consumption

There are many ways in which you could reduce energy consumption within your hall. Here are some of them:

In your room:

- switch off the light during the day and when you leave

- use energy efficient light bulbs

- switch of your mobile phone charger at the wall when you are not using it

- switch of your television, laptop, CD player and other equipment when you are not using them, rather than leaving them on standby

- enable the power-down features on your computer to come on after five minutes, as screensavers do not save energy

In the kitchen:

- only put as much water as you need in the kettle

- put a lid on your saucepan to reduce the amount of heat that escapes

- allow food to cool before putting it in the fridge or freezer

 - don't leave the fridge or freezer door open longer than necessary

 Heating:

 - turn the radiator off when you are out

- close the window before turning your radiator on

- close your curtains in the evening to prevent heat from escaping through the windows

- make a draught-excluder out of old blankets, scarves etc.

- turn the heating down and put a jumper on instead!

- report doors and windows that don't seal correctly when closed

Washing

- wash your clothes at 30 degrees

- line-dry your clothes, instead of using the tumbler-dryer

- save up your dirty laundry to do full loads, as half a load uses more than half the energy of a full load

- use the economy setting if you aren't doing a full load
